What I'm working on. A collected shohin Ponderosa Pine purchased from a collector in the Colorado area. I comtemplated removing the top branch and having a simple cascade bunjin gi style but am going with it for now. What do you think?

Re: Collected Shohin Ponderosa PineI like it the way it is, but can see the potential in a bunjin.
Re: Collected Shohin Ponderosa PineJohn,
I think I like both branches. It gives the tree quite a bit of character. If you removed the upper branch would the base be too thick for bunjin? What kind of pot did you have in mind, for either style?
Re: Collected Shohin Ponderosa PineHey John,
It is an interesting tree that needed to be studied a bit. To cut the top off seemed too safe and, as you said, it adds more character, individuality to the tree. Makes it's story a bit more complicated I have tweaked the tree a bit since the photo. The top is more rounded - looking a the photo I thought the tip 'point' accentuated the conflict between the horizontal and vertical (actually some one pointed this out to me). Anyway, I am thinking of a rustic shell pot but am open to other suggestions. thanks, John
Re: Collected Shohin Ponderosa PineThat's what I had in mind as well, but wasn't sure if you had something else up your sleeve. Any pictures of the proposed pot next to the tree?
Re: Collected Shohin Ponderosa PineYou have posted a very intersting tree. When I first saw it I thought the top branch should be completely jinned. That would make it one-of-a-kind. But, upon reflection that also could make it look "contrived". I would like to see it's current state and think some more!
Re: Collected Shohin Ponderosa PineIt was repotted a few weeks ago and I'll take a photo this weekend. It still has a way to go but is an interesting specimen. I'm always looking for yamadori shohin!
